Annual "DIA Day" Connects Businesses to DIA's Business Opportunities

More than 300 business owners and entrepreneurs interested in doing business at Denver International Airport participated in the third annual "DIA Day" this past November at the Renaissance Denver Hotel.

The event opened with Manager of Aviation Kim Day's welcoming comments and information about the airport's leadership presence in the aviation industry and the potential it holds for commerce development benefitting our business community. The moderator, Heather Barry, DIA's Commerce Hub director of business affairs hosted the event, anticipating the need for getting the word out about the airport's growing need to prepare businesses for aviation related contract work.

The free event offered entrepreneurs and local companies insight in how to do business at the nation's largest airport. The event highlighted specific business opportunities at DIA, including available work on airfield concrete projects, the Hotel and Transit Center Program, concession build-outs and procurements of goods and services.

This year's program included breakout sessions that provided an overview about doing business at DIA and "speed dating" sessions. Current DIA business owners and airport administrators met one-on-one, giving firms the chance to articulate their business specialties in front of individuals directly involved with the contract administration process.

The "DIA Day" event was sponsored by the DIA Commerce Hub.  The Hub acts as an advocate for small businesses, championing efforts that improve policy, increase access, and position firms to bid on projects across all DIA departments.  For more information about the Commerce Hub services or to contact its staff please call (303) 342-2351 or e-mail the office at

Iconic Colorado Bookstore Now Open at Denver International Airport

The Tattered Cover Book Store has arrived at DIA.   This is the first of four planned bookstores, and it opened this December in the center of the B Concourse.  The three remaining locations are scheduled to have staggered openings throughout the first half of 2014. Upon completion, the Tattered Cover stores will be located in all three concourses as well as DIA's Jeppesen Terminal.

In celebration of its opening, Tattered Cover's DIA location offered travelers special events. On Dec. 7 Australian author Graeme Simsion visited the store to sign his critically-acclaimed first novel, The Rosie Project. Four days later, Amy Tan, the bestselling author of The Joy Luck Club spent some time signing her new novel, The Valley of Amazement.

The B Concourse location is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The famed bookstore is part of an exclusive license agreement with existing airport bookseller, Hudson Booksellers, a brand of premier travel retailer Hudson Group. In addition to the construction of four Tattered Cover locations at the airport, the agreement also covers the construction of five Hudson News newsstands. Two of the newsstands opened Wednesday Dec. 4, on the east and west ends of the B Concourse.

Wetzel's Pretzels and a Second Dunkin' Donuts Join DIA's Family of Restaurants

Concourse B is the new home of a Wetzel's Pretzels franchise, which opened Dec. 19 near Gate B22 on the west end of the concourse, and on Dec. 27, Dunkin' Donuts opened at A Gates, so air travelers who are looking for a sweet snack on the go or a cup of the company's signature coffee can now find all that and more.

The restaurant's menu includes signature pretzels such as the Wetzel's Original, Sinful Cinnamon and Almond Crunch pretzels, along with a variety of baked cheese pretzels and beverages. The location will open at 6 a.m. and stay open until 10 p.m. daily.

Denver's manager of aviation, Kim Day, said the DIA community is pleased to welcome Wetzel's Pretzels. "This is a further step in the transformation of our shopping and dining experience, which is providing more choices and a wider range of options," she said.

The first Dunkin' Donuts store opened in September at Final Approach, the airport's new cell phone waiting area and food court.

"Dunkin' Donuts has proven to be popular with our customers, as more than 7,200 donuts are being sold every day at the Final Approach location," said Kim Day.

CDOT Study: DIA a $26.3 Billion Economic Engine for Colorado Each Year

Denver International Airport has grown to become a $26.3 billion economic engine for Colorado and a critical link for businesses and travelers, according to a new report by the Colorado Department of Transportation's Division of Aeronautics. The 2013 Economic Impact Study for Colorado Airports, which was released in September by CDOT, shows that DIA's critical role in contributing to the Colorado economy annually has increased almost 18 percent, from $22.3 billion in 2008 to $26.3 billion in 2013.

Among the other findings in the study:

  • DIA supports the equivalent of 188,338 full-time jobs and a payroll totaling $8.6 billion
  • The airport accounts for 66 percent of the estimated $18.2 billion statewide economic impact from airport management, tenants and capital investment
  • Colorado manufacturers rely on air-cargo services at DIA, which accounts for an annual economic impact of $5.4 billion
  • DIA-supported activities contribute more than $1.1 billion in local, state and federal taxes
  • 15 percent of Colorado's total employment is in some way supported by aviation
  • DIA is critical for the state's tourism industry; most visitors who arrive in Colorado via commercial aircraft travel through Denver's airport
